Description
Sarcococca ruscifolia, also called Fragrant Sweet Box, is a compact evergreen shrub with oval but pointed, glossy, dark-green leaves. A winter-flowering plant, it produces small but highly fragrant creamy-white flowers, followed by long-lasting deep-red berries for added seasonal interest.
This pretty evergreen shrub is slow-growing and low-growing, so very low maintenance. Being evergreen, it adds colour, shape and texture to the garden year-round. It's also highly pollution-tolerant so a good option for urban gardens.
Although classed as hardy in cold weather, Sarcococca ruscifolia will thrive in a sheltered, shady spot - either in partial or full-shade, making it a good option for north-facing gardens or shady borders in general.
Sarcococca ruscifolia grows to 50-100cm height and spread. Little pruning is required but if a tidy up is needed, prune in mid to late spring.
