Description

Silver Sage or Salvia argentea is a low-growing, herbaceous perennial which is prized for its large ruffle-edged velvety leaves which are a striking silvery grey-green. Growing in an attractive rosette formation, it produces tall spikes with white flowers in late summer, popular with bees. However, it's the foliage which is the standout feature of this plant, bringing a soft shimmer and texture to the garden.

This drought-tolerant mediterranean plant loves its sunshine so needs a sunny spot to thrive. Like lavender, Silver Sage likes a more dry soil and dislikes wet or waterlogged conditions so it's important that the soil is very free-draining. Cut back the flowers / stem when spent and before they seed to prolong the plant's life. Other than that it requires no maintenance.

With the flower spikes, Silver Sage grows to around 1m height and just 50cm spread, but is essentially a low-growing plant, ideal for rockeries, gravel gardens, beds and borders. It pairs well with purple flowering plants such as Lavender or Perovskia.
