Sorbus aucuparia

Rowan flowers from May/June with creamy white clusters of flowers which can have as many as 250 flowers in swathes up to 15cm across featuring a strong, sweet scent. These become the brilliant orange-red berries for which this small tree is most known, appearing from August/September and ripening in October/November, as the leaf colour is changing to orange/red before being shed.

The abundant autumn berries are highly popular with birds who enjoy the juicy berries as a food source when the weather turns colder. For more information about bird-friendly hedging, read our blog on attracting birds to your hedge.

Not only are Rowan berries fantastic for birds, they are edible berries for us also and can make delicious jams and jellys. For more edible treats, see our full range of edible hedging, which features lots of different flowers and fruits that have culinary and even health-boosting properties!

We also sell many other hedging varieties that have berries, as well as a range of flowering hedging.

Enjoy these characteristics and plenty more when you combine Rowan with a selection of our other wonderful native hedge plants. The collection of attributes in a mixed native feature makes a beautiful hedge with interest for every season.

Rowan is also available to buy from Hedges Direct as a tree. The Common Mountain Ash Tree (Sorbus aucuparia) is just one of the lovely trees featured in our beautiful Ornamental Trees range.

*Please note that in accordance with DEFRA regulations, we are unable to dispatch this species to anywhere outside of the UK Mainland.
