Further Information
You'll see our recommended planting densities for each size and root type listed in the product grid. We suggest that you use these as a guide, taking into consideration how long you're willing to wait to see your finished hedge. As a rough indication bare roots can be planted at anything from 3 to 7 per metre and cell grown between 4 and 6 - the higher densities here would need to be planted in a double staggered row or zig-zag.

Pruning Advice
Rowan is a species that needs to be trimmed when the plant enters dormancy in late autumn or early winter. If trimmed during its growing period, Rowan can bleed a white sap and it can become susceptible to disease as a result. However, if there is dead wood, it can be trimmed back to the live growth at any time.
We'd definitely recommend trimming a Rowan hedge back each year rather than leaving it to completely informal growth, in order to keep a strong and established framework, as the abundant berry clusters it produces in late summer can lie heavy on the branches, causing longer branches to droop.
By trmming back the dead wood and tidying up the hedge in the late autumn or early winter, it readies the plant for the spring encouraging healthy and strong new growth and leading to better blossom and berry production in the year ahead.
