Description

Prunus incisa 'Kojo-no-mai' also called Fuji Cherry, is a deciduous shrub - almost tree-like, with a compact and rounded shape. It is unique in that its branches grow naturally in a distinctive zig-zag pattern and it will eventually reach around 2m height and spread. Prunus 'Kojo-no-mai' is awash in early spring like many Flowering Cherries, with drooping clusters of pretty white flowers on slim stems. The flowers develop soft, rose-bud pink centres as they mature. The serrated bronze-green foliage emerges just after the flowers, then maturing to green before taking on its colourful autumn palette of reds and oranges.

Double award-winning Prunus 'Kojo-no-mai' is a recipient of both the RHS Award of Garden Merit and RHS Plants for Pollinators for its attractive appearance throughout the seasons and its popularity with beneficial pollinators. A superb option for an eye-catching focal point it will grow equally well in a container or planted in pride of place in the garden. Prunus 'Kojo-no-mai's small stature and slow growth, makes it the perfect addition for small gardens but it's also able to hold its own in larger gardens too because of its stand-out visual appeal.

Position your Prunus 'Kojo-no-mai' in full sun for the best flowering. Despite its delicate looks, it is fully hardy and adapted to the UK climate, even extremely cold weather so can handle most locations except very exposed. Plant in moist, well-drained soil and prune lightly annually after flowering to maintain its shape and health. Ensure you water well for several months after planting to help it establish. TO keep Prunus 'Kojo-no-mai' to a more compact shape, it will respond well to hard pruning after several years' growth.

Pruning Advice

Prunus ‘Kojo-no-mai’ is slow growing so only needs a small amount of maintenance. Trim to shape after flowering in late spring if needed and remove any diseased, crossing or damaged branches. A regular light prune each year will also help to create a balanced branch framework and a healthy plant.

If you wish to keep it to a smaller more compact shape, Prunus ‘Kojo-no-mai’ will respond well to a hard pruning, but this should only be necessary after several years’ growth.
