Description

Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Gold Star' is an attractive variegated shrub with mid-green/gold leaves with a creamy-gold central rib and veins. The shrub is named for the way in which the leaves emerge to form a star shape as you look at the foliage. The newer growth has more yellow tones but becomes variegated with maturity. In spring small, maroon flowers are sometimes produced.

This bushy yet compact evergreen shrub is popular for bringing colour and interest to the garden all year round and grows to a maximum height and spread of 2m x 2m. With a naturally rounded form and neat foliage, Pittosporum 'Gold Star' will look pretty planted in beds or borders with contrasting plants of varying height, colour and movement like grasses or perennials, or planted amongst architectural plants such as Phormiums to create a planting scheme with lots of variety and visual interest. It will equally look just as lovely as a pot-grown plant on the patio.

Plant Pittosporum 'Gold Star' in any moist, well-drained soil in a sunny or partially shaded position and a sheltered location. This plant is hardy but may need protection from hard frosts and cold, drying winds. It needs little maintenance other than a tidy if needed which is best done in spring after flowering. Do not trim over winter as the cold could damage the cut shoots and the plant. Mulch annually with a good compost or manure in spring.

Pruning Advice

Pittosporum ‘Gold Star’ is both easy to grow and maintain. Simply trim to shape in spring as cold winter weather can damage newly cut shoots and the foliage too if cut later in the year. Remove any damaged or diseased branches and maintain your chosen size and shape.

Add a good few centimetres of compost or mulch around the base of the plant in spring to encourage good, healthy growth.
