Carex buchananii, also called Buchanan's Sedge or Leatherleaf Sedge is a perennial evergreen sedge grass native to New Zealand. It features fine, arching coppery foliage that tends to curl slightly at the tips and during summer the foliage can take on a hint or pink becoming an attractive rose-bronze colour. In summer, small brown flowers emerge on silvery grey stems.
This popular little sedge grass is the perfect edging plant for borders or pathways with its unusual colour and fine foliage which softens edges and contrasts prettily with other planting. It can also be a lovely addition to pots and containers too as well as rockeries.
Plant in full sun or partial shade in soil which can hold a bit of moisture as it doesn't tolerate dry soil as well, however waterlogged soil is also problematic so avoid wet and dry extremes if possible. Being fully hardy, Carex buchananii will grow happily in any location, sheltered or exposed.
To maintain, simply comb out the dead foliage in winter and feed occasionally with a general fertiliser in spring and summer to keep this plant in tip top ondition.
