Malus 'Evereste'

The Crab Apple 'Evereste' is a charming, small deciduous tree that forms a broadly conical outline. This species is highly valued for its ornamental qualities, beginning in early spring when its dark pink buds burst into a profusion of large, white flowers. These flowers, measuring around 5 cm in width, often display a hint of pink in some clusters, creating a stunning visual display that almost entirely obscures the branches beneath them.

As the seasons progress, the tree's dark green leaves, lightly lobed, provide a lush backdrop for the blossoms. These leaves transition to a striking yellow-bronze in autumn, adding further seasonal interest. Following the flowering period, the tree produces a substantial crop of small, yellow-orange fruits, each approximately 2.5 cm in length. These crab apples, often flushed with red, can remain on the bare branches well into winter, providing a colourful contrast to the barren landscape.

The 'Evereste' is a hardy tree, capable of reaching a mature height of 6 to 8 metres. Its tidy, upright growth habit can develop a semi-weeping appearance under the weight of its abundant fruit. The crab apples are not only visually appealing but are also practical, as they can be used to make jellies, sauces, or even pressed into a mixed cider brew. This tree, native to the UK, is particularly noted for its golden autumn foliage and its ability to flourish in a variety of settings, making it a popular choice for gardens and landscapes.
