Malus domestica 'Egremont Russet'

The Egremont Russet is a distinguished dessert cultivar, particularly well-suited to northern, cooler, and higher rainfall regions of the UK. Falling within pollination group 2, this variety is known for its ability to produce reliable, abundant crops. The apples themselves are medium-sized with a yellowish-green base, often half flushed with a brownish-red hue and covered in a characteristic russet. This variety's unique nutty flavour, combined with its sweet, dense flesh, makes it a favourite among apple enthusiasts. The season of use extends from October to December, during which the apples are at their best.Although the Egremont Russet is partially self-fertile, it will benefit from the presence of a pollination partner to ensure optimal fruit production. However, it is worth noting that this variety is not ideal for the coldest parts of the UK. The apple's skin is a dull orange-yellow, heavily russeted, giving it a rustic appearance. The flesh is pale cream, dense, and somewhat reminiscent of a slightly unripe pear, with a sweetness that intensifies as the fruit matures. The flesh, while moist, becomes drier with storage, offering a texture that is more akin to a firm pear than to a juicy apple.Originating from the Victorian era, the Egremont Russet remains a popular choice among those who appreciate traditional English apples. Its delicate flavour is subtly sweet, with a "nutty" profile that is both distinctive and versatile. Beyond being enjoyed fresh, this variety pairs exceptionally well with savoury dishes, such as salads, and is a particularly popular companion for cheese. Despite its softer flesh, the Egremont Russet retains a pleasing firmness, making it a versatile and enduring favourite in British orchards.
