Description
Lonicera periclymenum 'Serotina' is a colourful deciduous climbing honeysuckle bearing fragrant deep red-purple flowers with white interiors from mid to late summer which is why it's also known as late Dutch honeysuckle. The flowers are then followed on by small red berries.
The long tubular flowers are around 4cm in length and are produced in circular clusters off a central bud emerging slim and upward curving until opening, when each individual petal curls back exposing the long stamens. The flowers are highly fragrant as well as bright and attractive and the white interior turns sunny yellow as the season progresses. The large oval leaves are a deep green with paler undersides.
Lonicera 'Serotina' is a large vigorous climbing shrub so will cover a wall, trellis, fence, pergola or any other type of framework very quickly. It is a natural twining climber so will cling to structures without much assistance. Its sweet and intense floral scent is strongest later in the day or evening so to make the most of this, plant where the fragrance can be enjoyed to maximum effect, perhaps near to a window, door or seating area.
Lonicera 'Serotina' prefers a partly shaded position for the best growth although it will also tolerate full sun. It will grow well in any well-drained, moist soil and is very hardy in the UK climate meaning that it will grow well in any location, sheltered or exposed. It is a low maintenance shrub with minimal pruning needed but if required, lightly prune immediately after flowering.
