Description
Bring a touch of the orient to your garden or patio with Acer palmatum 'Katsura' - a beautiful Japanese Maple featuring yellow-orange foliage with a pink edge in spring, which gradually become green in summer before turning a fiery orange in autumn. Occasionally tiny red flowers may also be produced in spring.
This upright deciduous shrub is popular for its colourful foliage which changes dramatically through the seasons. Classed as either a large shrub or small tree, even gardens on the smaller side can benefit from this lovely Acer as it is slow growing only reaching maturity after 20 years plus. Delightful to look at and needing very little maintenance, Japanese Maple 'Katsura' will add both colour and elegance to your outdoor space.
Most Acers including 'Katsura' grow best in slightly acidic (ericaceous) soil that is well-drained and the ideal position is in light shade in a sheltered location although they will tolerate some direct sun. It's essential to water well as they are establishing and water deeply to ensure it gets to the roots. A layer of mulch after planting will help keep moisture in the soil. If planting in a pot, more regular watering will be needed to avoid the soil drying out.
Acer palmatum 'Katsura' can reach up to 4m height and spread but over many years. No regular pruning is requred, simply remove any diseased, crossing or dead branches in late winter when it is dormant. Shaping is rarely required as Japanese Maples naturally have an attractive form.
