Description
Hydrangea petiolaris is a climbing hydrangea with pretty Lacecap type flowers in summer to around 20cm across, consisting of a central flattened cluster of small creamy-white flowers surrounded by larger white sterile florets. The heart-shaped green leaves turn a lovely golden colour in autumn.
This attractive climbing variety of hyrdrangea is a large, deciduous shrub that is self-clinging via aerial roots so will naturally grow up walls or trellises without being tied into place. It's initially slow to develop and produce flowers in the first couple of years, but once established it becomes truly spectacular earning itself the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
Hydrangea petiolaris is a vigorous climber which can reach up to 12m in height and up to 5m spread so it does require space to thrive. However, it creates a lovely informal aesthetic and can be used very effectively to mask unsightly walls or fences - and do so remarkably quickly once established.
This low maintenance hardy climber is best in partial shade but will also tolerate full sun and full shade; it will even grow in a north facing position making it a versatile choice of flowering climber. Plant your Hydrangea petiolaris in moist, well-drained soil with a good mulch annually. Trim back after flowering if required to tidy up and to remove any diseased or damaged branches.
