Description

Hydrangea macrophylla 'White Wave' also known as Hydrangea 'Mariesii Grandiflora', is a gorgeous lacecap variety of Hydrangea. It is a small to mid-sized deciduous shrub with glossy-green serrated leaves and central clusters of small, light-pink or light-blue flowers encircled by larger, flat-headed soft white flowers called florets. The florets appear to grow in a 'wave' around the central cluster which is where the name 'White Wave' comes from.

The larger, showier florets attract bees and other pollinating insects to the smaller, fertile flowers in the centre and the flowers as a whole make an excellent, long-lasting cut flower. The flowers are in bloom from mid to late summer.

Hydrangea 'White Wave' is bushy in habit and grows to a height and spread of around 1.5m. It makes a lovely addition to the rear of an herbaceous border but will also stand on its own as a specimen shrub with its delightful and abundant flowers and glossy foliage. Hydrangea 'White Wave' is a good choice for planting in coastal locations being salt tolerant, but prefers a location sheltered from strong winds. Plant Hydrangea 'White Wave' in full sun or partial shade for the best flowering and in any soil type except chalky as it prefers a non-alkaline soil.

Although regular maintenance is not really required, if you prune back the plant hard in March, this will encourage flower production and a larger flower size in summer. However, if you wish to strengthen the stems at the base of the shrub, just trim lightly. Otherwise, remove any diseased leaves or shoots in autumn taking care to collect any leaves that fall around the plant also.

Pruning Advice

Hydrangea ‘White Wave’ blooms from mid to late summer. It will flower well with very little attention. Hard pruning is not needed, however when pruned right back in early spring, the flowers of your Hydrangea ‘White Wave’ will be larger and more plentiful. If you require a stronger base to your shrub, we recommend only light pruning as this will strengthen the stems.

Hydrangea 'White Wave' can be prone to diseases such as leaf spot or powdery mildew. A sign of this infection is a distorted shape to your shrub’s leaves. These diseases can be treated easily, and we advise removing any infected leaves from around the plant once they fall in autumn.
