Griselinia littoralis

With its glossy, apple-green leaves and soft, leathery texture, Griselinia (Griselinia littoralis) is a lush, evergreen hedging plant that brings colour to gardens all year round. Unlike many other evergreens, Griselinia hedging has a softer, more open structure, giving it a slightly relaxed and natural feel while still providing good coverage. In the springtime, a female Griselinia hedge sometimes produces small flowers and non-toxic berries, which are great for attracting pollinators.

Whether it’s used as a formal boundary hedge or a more informal shrub, Griselinia littoralis offers flexibility and easy upkeep. This species is one of the best hedging choices for coastal and exposed gardens, known for its high salt tolerance and ability to withstand strong winds. It thrives in well-drained normal, chalk, or clay soils, prefers full sun, and is drought-tolerant once established — making it a relatively low-maintenance option. With a moderate growth rate of 20-40cm per year, it quickly forms a dense hedge that responds well to occasional trimming.

Our Griselinia hedge plants are available as bare root (from autumn to spring, with pre-orders available in summer) and pot-grown plants all year round for flexible planting.* Learn more with our hedging root types guide. Or, for a colourful, variegated alternative, why not try Griselinia 'Dixon's Cream' Hedge (Griselinia littoralis 'Variegata') — known for its creamy-white edged foliage?
