English Lavender is a lovely evergreen perennial with a very distinctive look and fragrance. It makes a beautiful, compact, easy-to-grow garden plant and flowers from mid to late summer and even into September. The fragrant flowers are unique and recognisable and are as attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects as they are to us. The calming scent of Lavender can also help to create a tranquil spot in the garden whilst the colourful flower spires look stunning in any setting.

This collection of 6 x 2L pots will be made up of 3 x English Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia Munstead) and 3 x Lavender Hidcote (Lavandula angustifolia Hidcote).

English Lavender should be grown in a sheltered, sunny spot with very well-drained soil and being drought tolerant plants, will thrive in hot summers . Lavender plants do not tolerate shade or very wet conditions, particularly with cold/ freezing temperatures or heavy soil. Some cover might be required to protect the plant over winter to ensure it remains healthy.

Trimming of spent flower heads can encourage further flower production during the summer. In late summer, prune the plants back by around a third of their growth to allow light into the centre of the plants.This will allow new shoots to form shortly before the plants go into dormancy. The new shoots will then grow and produce flowers the following summer.

Is English Lavender Evergreen?

All lavender varieties are technically classed as evergreen, as in warmer climates they retain their grey-green foliage year round. However, the cooler UK climate means Lavender plants go into dormancy from early autumn until late spring. During dormancy the foliage turns brown and twiggy, appearing to die back. This is perfectly normal and as the weather warms in late spring, your Lavender plants will once again become green and develop growth ready for summmer flowering.
