Berberis darwinii

Darwins Barberry is an impressive variety of Berberis hedging. Other species from the evergreen Berberis or Barberry family, include Berberis stenophylla and Berberis julianae.) The foliage produced by Berberis darwinii is dark green and prickly, resembling tiny Holly leaves, along with bunches of orange-yellow nodding flowers held on red stems in spring. Berberis darwinii also produces blue-purple autumn berries and sometimes the second flush of flowers. However, Berberis darwinii is recognised and favoured for its spring colour and prickly green leaves.

Aside from the aesthetic appearance and this species being evergreen, Berberis darwinni is an excellent choice of hedging to keep intruders away from your property due to its prickly nature. Darwin Barberry is one of our recommended intruder proof hedging plants.
