Description
Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple' is more commonly known as a Smoke Bush. It is a large deciduous shrub with distinctive, rounded, deep-purple leaves that in autumn become a vivid red. In summer, it is awash with fluffy plumes of pink-purple flowers that resemble a pink smoky haze which is where the name derives from.
Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple' is a colourful bushy shrub, that offers a striking contrast against other garden plants in beds or borders but also shines as a standalone specimen with its deep and vibrant colour. It will grow to an average height and spread after 10 years of 4m x 4m but is easy to keep to a more compact shape.
Plant your Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple' in well-drained soil in full sun to achieve the most intense colour. Mulch around the base of the plant during the growing season to preserve soil moisture. A hard prune in late winter will encourage new growth and good leaf colouration, otherwise simply trim out any diseased or crossing shoots.

Pruning Advice
Trim back crossing, diseased or damaged stems in the dormant season in late winter / early spring. Cotinus coggygria ‘Royal Purple’ will also stand a hard prune in order to restore a good shape and revive the plant.
Hard pruning will encourage new shoots and more vibrant leaf colouration, however after a hard cut back, flowers may not be as prolific the following season.
