Description
Acer rubrum, or Red Maple, is a majestic deciduous shrub that will, if desired, grow into an impressive tree known for its brilliant autumn colour. The lobed green leaves turn vivid shades of scarlet, orange and yellow in autumn, putting on a spectacular seasonal display. Its upright form and silvery-grey bark add year-round interest.
Ideal as a statement shrub/tree for medium to large gardens, Red Maple brings structure, shade and stunning autumn impact. It’s great for wildlife, offering shelter and nectar in spring. A low-maintenance option for gardeners looking to introduce height and seasonal drama.
Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil in full sun or light shade. Acer rubrum grows best in a sheltered spot away from strong winds. Grown as a tree, it can reach up to 30m tall and 6–8m wide or more at maturity, but grows at a moderate pace.
Little pruning is needed – just remove any dead or crossing branches in winter when it is dormant. Trim further if you wish to keep to a more manageable size.
