Description

Acer palmatum, also known as 'Smooth' Japanese Maple is the original Japanese Maple when we think of Acers. It is a bushy, deciduous, upright Maple with classic colouring and a domed shape head when mature. Through spring and summer the full, multi-lobed leaves are a lush, deeper green colour than other green-leaved varieties, becoming rich shades of red and orange in the autumn. With beautiful autumnal colour Acer palmatum will provide a stunning focal point or a colourful, architectural backdrop or centrepiece to other planting.

Acer palmatum is one of the larger growing of the ornamental Japanese Maples but will still grow happily in a container. Suitable for small/medium sized gardens, courtyard gardens, rock gardens and patios. Acer palmatum, like the other Japanese Maples has the advantage of being almost effortless to grow and is low maintenance, needing watering only in hotter summer months if required.

Acer palmatum prefers semi-shaded conditions to develop good leaf colour and a sheltered location but is remarkably hardy tolerating fairly cold winters. Plant in moist, well-drained soil.
