Erica darlyensis Kramers Red
Erica darlyensis Silverbeads
Winter Heathers appear small and delicate yet are extremely hardy, evergreen, spreading, ground-cover plants with profuse, upright sprays of vibrant flowers and foliage of varying hues. They provide a lovely burst of colour through the winter and spring months and are popular garden additions as a result. By planting in groups you can achieve a stunning visual to brighten up colder months.
They are incredibly easy to grow and are the perfect addition to add seasonal colour and ground cover to rock gardens, cottage gardens, coastal gardens, containers, slopes and banks. In late spring, the flowers are also a firm favourite with bees and other insects, attracting pollinators to the garden. Best of all, being fairly dense ground-cover plants and with some species being matting varieties, they are adept at smothering weeds!
Ericas thrive in a sunny, open position although they will tolerate some light shade, for example under high-canopied deciduous trees. They also prefer fairly moist, well-drained soil, more on the acidic side, but will tolerate mildly alkaline conditions to a degree. They are virtually disease and pest free and so need little by way of maintenance, with pruning taking place just once a year in late spring (no later) as a quick trim of the flowering stems back to their base as they fade. However, as they have a tendency to dry out fairly quickly, be sure to water them well when they are young and also during hot weather.
