These Alpine plants are wonderfully varied and will give you a selection of compact, pretty, ground-cover plants that are often seen as nature's carpet. Featuring small, vibrantly colourful flowers and a variety of leaf shape and colour, alpines also remain one of the most hardy plants and therefore ideal for the UK climate.
Perfect for cottage gardens, rock gardens, gravel beds, banks and slopes or used as an edging plant or general ground cover, these adaptable little gems can grow in the most challenging of locations. However, they are equally at home planted into a lovely trough or other container, where they can be appreciated, up close and personal, for their delightful and individual attributes.
Most alpines in this collection will prefer fertile, well-drained soil, however they are also very adaptable to poorer soils and many are quite drought and even salt tolerant meaning that they will withstand challenging environmental conditions. For light, they do best in full sun although some will tolerate partial shade also.
Pruning and maintenance is very little if any at all with alpines as they are exceptionally easy to grow and remain fairly compact. Simply dead-head the flowers after they are spent on flowering varieties and this will encourage bloom production for the season. Being very hardy they are generally disease free and (with the exception of the usual slugs and snails), pest resistant which is also advantageous for the occasional or novice gardener.
