Our Fern Collection consists of four of the most popular fern varieties and is ideal for informal garden planting. With a range of evergreen, semi-evergreen and deciduous species, each pack of 6 pots will be made up from a selection of the following species:
Dryopteris affinis Cristata
Polystichum setiferum Proliferum
With a year-round appeal, ferns bring a verdant, softer and informal look to the garden and work exceptionally well to create a beautful and interesting planting scheme in more shaded areas which is where they will thrive. Ferns are generally very easy to grow and disease resistant, meaning you can pretty much leave them to their own devices, simply trimming off any dead or damaged fronds to keep them looking tip-top.
Try to allow a good amount of space for ferns to grow as certain varieties like to spread their fronds wide; once fully grown they can be truly spectacular and can provide a lovely focal point with gentle movement in the breeze. Their shape and luscious, verdant colour can also complement other shade-loving plants. Alternatively, if you don't have a lot of space to plant ferns into the garden, they can look especially stunning planted into containers and can offset other perennials beautifully.
Ferns don't require much by way of feeding but a good mulch or compost will help and Bonemeal can also be used. Water regularly in the first year of growth if the soil is on the dry side and shaded.
We recommend trimming your Calamagrostis 'Karl Foerster' Grass right back down to the ground in February, but not before, as the wheat-coloured stems can add drama to a winter garden.
