Purple Leaf Sand Cherry Hedge Plants Description
This is a lovely purple-leafed shrub suitable for hedging in that it only grows to about 2.5m. It wakes from Winter with pink flower buds which open to single white/pink subtle flowers on the old wood and these are closely followed by bright reddish purple leaves, which stay crimson red throughout the Summer before changing to bronzy green autumn leaf colour.
It likes moist, well drained soil and sun or semi shade and is adaptable to the urban environment, tolerating poor soils, drought, heat or very cold conditions. These plants are available all year round.
Consider Purple Beech or Berberis Red Leaf hedging for similar dark foliage, or view our plants with colourful foliage under our Features and Styles section on the main menu for numerous colourful options.
See also our evergreen hedging section for plants with year round cover and added seasonal characteristics. Further flowering options can also be be found in this our flowering hedge section where you can access many species of flowering hedges with diverse colours and shapes.
For the pot sizes that we supply, the planting density is listed alongside the individual plant sizes in the table. Generally speaking this is beuween 3 and 5 per metre, and for the larger pot perhaps just 3 per metre. However this is dependent upon how long you are happy to wait for a full-looking hedge.
For more information on planting distances please see our
planting density advice section.
Prunus cistena (Purple Leaf Sand Cherry) should be pruned early in the season before you see new growth appearing, but after the risk of frosts have gone in order to promote healthy growth and flowering.
