Prunus Kanzan is the signature flowering cherry tree seen all over the UK. Its abundant frilly-edged pink/purple blossom usually heralds the arrival of spring. Product Details

The nation's favourite flowering cherry tree, Prunus 'Kanzan' bursts into life in spring with its bountiful pinkish/purple flower blossom for which it is known and loved. The double-flowering blooms are often seen as a sign of the general awakening from winter to spring.

The flowers remain on the branches for a time before gradually being replaced by the pretty bronzed foliage. Its leaves then mature into a mid-green hue in summer, turning burnt orange and copper tones in the autumn.

Prunus Kanzan grows strong and upright. It makes a fantastic feature tree on its own, however an avenue of these lovely trees is a sight to behold when in fulll bloom or autumnal foliage.

In 10 years of growth, this cherry tree has a height and spread of 5 x 4 metres but will grow to double that height and breadth over its lifetime.

Prunus Kanzan is suited to most soil types, but avoid wet or shallow soils. It is best positioned in full or partial sun.

Planting Prunus Kanzan
Our Japanese Flowering Cherry trees are pot grown so can be planted all year-round. We recommend sprinkling Rootgrow when planting to enhance the growth quality.

When planting:
1. Dig a square hole as deep as your root mass and approximately 2x as wide
2. Mix 50% of the original soil with 50% compost
3. Remove the tree from the pot and gently loosen the soil around the roots.
4. Place the tree into the hole, fill it with your soil mix and firm around gently (avoid banking the collar of the tree)

Aftercare Prunus Kanzan
1. Remove weeds and grass around the area for the first couple years of the growing season.
2. When planting in spring and summer: water well for the first few months and increase watering if there are periods of hot or dry weather
3. When planting in autumn: you may only need to water a little
4. Use a rabbit guard if prone to rabbits in the area

Pruning Prunus Kanzan
Prune Prunus Kanzan for the first few years to create a healthier and more balanced branch framework and enforce your desired tree shape. In later years you will only need to remove any damaged or unwanted branches.

Pruning time: After flowering season
