Prunus 'Amanogawa' is a smaller Japanese cherry tree favoured for its beautiful dense clusters of pale pink flowers borne on the almost bare branches in spring. The flowers are also enjoyed for the light and elegant fragrance. Bronze-green foliage emerges shortly afterwards then matures into a mid-green hue in summer, before bursting into fiery autumnal shades of red and orange.

Prunus Amanogawa grows in a columnar upright form and makes a beautiful feature tree in any garden, although its size and form make it a popular choice smaller gardens. It is also an excellent choice for urban settings due to its tolerance of pollution.

In 10 years of growth, this cherry tree has a height and spread of 4 x 1 metres.

Prunus Amanogawa is suited to most soil types, as long as they are moist and well-drained. It is best positioned in full or partial sun.

Planting Prunus Amanogawa
Our Japanese Flowering Cherry trees are pot grown so can be planted all year-round. We recommend sprinkling Rootgrow when planting to enhance the growth quality.

When planting:
1. Dig a square hole as deep as your root mass and approximately 2x as wide
2. Mix 50% of the original soil with 50% compost
3. Remove the tree from the pot and gently loosen the soil around the roots.
4. Place the tree into the hole, fill it with your soil mix and firm around gently (avoid banking the collar of the tree)

1. Remove weeds and grass around the area for the first couple years of the growing season.
2. When planting in spring and summer: water well for the first few months and increase watering if there are periods of hot or dry weather
3. When planting in autumn: you may only need to water a little
4. Use a rabbit guard if prone to rabbits in the area

Carry out formative pruning on Prunus Amanogawa for the first few years to create a healthier and more balanced branch framework. This will save extensive maintenance in the future. For future pruning simply remove any damaged or unwanted branches.

Pruning time: After flowering season
