London Plane Maure Pleached Espalier Tree Information

What is a Mature Pleached Espalier Tree?

The term 'pleached' refers to trees that are trained to form a screen of branches and foliage a single straight stem. The single stem of our pleached trees are between 2 and 2.2m tall. Planted in rows at set distances, they will form an elevated 'green wall' that can be ideal as an alternative to high fencing.

Espalier pleached trees differ from standard pleached trees in that branches are trained quite specifically along the cane structure in 'lines' to accommodate flowers and fruiting varieties of trees as well as standard leafy species. Having space in between the rows of foliage allows for even development of flowers and fruit ensuring plenty of room to develop and grow.

Mature pleached espalier trees are established trees with full growth development on the cane framework compared to the fresh pleached versions. Having been carefully nurtured and trained over an extended period of time, these lovely specimens feature beautiful, full rows of foliage, some with abundant flowers giving way to fruit as the season progresses. These particular pleached trees offer a varied aesthetic to the standard pleached tree and the flowering and fruiting varieties are particularly visually appealing.

Species Information

London Plane (Platanus acerifolia) pleached trees are a popular deciduous tree similar to a Sycamore, thought to be a hybrid of the American and Oriental Plane. They are most noted for their large, thickly textured, five-lobed pointed leaves not unlike a maple leaf that turn a brilliant orange-yellow colour in autumn. The tree also has unusual green-grey bark which develops large scales that peel to reveal a creamy-white bark underneath creating an attractive camouflage effect. In spring the tree flowers in spherical clusters on a long drooping stem developing into fruit made up of hundreds of small seed-pods that disperse in the late autumn and winter winds.

Used extensively in urban areas, the London Plane grows quickly and to fairly large proportions and is very tolerant or any soil type and weather as well as acting as a pollutant absorber to some degree. All these characteristics make this tree a popular choice, particularly in London itself where this species makes up over half of the trees in the city, thus earning it the name 'London' Plane.

Delivery Information

Once an order has been placed, we will contact you to arrange delivery. Delivery of all pleached trees is via a large truck due to their size, shape and weight. Lifting equipment will be needed to help unload and move the trees.

Although free delivery via a pallet will show when ordering online, as this is a specialist delivery, a delivery charge is applicable on all orders under 5 units.

For more information around delivery, please call 01257 263 876 and ask for a pleached tree specialist. They will be able to provide costs for smaller orders and advise on lorry type, access required and lifting equipment needed to help unload the trees.

Please note: We recommend that any moving or lifting equipment such as a forklift, is booked for a full day not part day, as we cannot guarantee what time the trees will arrive on site on the day of delivery.

Further information about delivery can be found via our Pleached Trees Information Guide or please call 01257 263 876 and speak to a member of our team who will be happy to advise you.
