Hydrangea serrata 'Bluebird' is a very compact Hydrangea only growing to around 50-100cm height and spread, making it the perfect hydrangea for small gardens or containers. Hydrangea 'Bluebird' is of the lacecap variety featuring flattened flower heads where a central cluster of small indigo flowers is encircled by simple, large-petalled light silvery-blue florets which attract bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects to the fertile flowers at the centre.

Hydrangea 'Bluebird' is a recipient of the RHS Award of Garden Merit for its vibrant and long-lasting blooms from mid-summer into autumn and its colourful foliage which initially bronze-green, also takes on dusky red and purple shades later in the year.

Hydrangea serrata 'Bluebird' is very hardy and so good for areas with late winter frosts. Plant in a sunny or semi-shaded location but take care to water regularly as this variety of hydrangea is sensitive to drought. Take particular care if container grown as pots can dry out more quickly. Hydrangea 'Bluebird' prefers moist, well-drained soil but to ensure you keep the stunning blue tones, the soil must be kept acidic or they will take on pink hues. If this occurs, Aluminium salts can help to restore the acidity of the soil.

In spring, remove any faded, old flowerheads after the last frosts have passed. Cut back the previously flowered stems to a strong pair of buds and remove any crossing or diseased shoots. This will encourage healthy and productive growth and flowering in summer. Water regularly and mulch or compost applied annually around the base will help the shrub to thrive.
