Hydrangea paniculata 'Silver Dollar' produces superb, dense, cone-shaped flower heads from mid-summer, with clusters of large petalled flowers that initially emerge light green but mature to a soft,creamy-white. Toward the end of the season the lightly fragranced flowers become pink-blushed. The conical flower clusters are supported on strong upright stems sitting proud of the deep-green, bushy foliage, creating an attractive, rounded silhouette.
Winner of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, Hydrangea 'Silver Dollar' is a deciduous, fairly compact Hydrangea growing to just 1.5m height and spread and is therefore suitable for small to mid-sized gardens. Offering lots of visual appeal and extended seasonal interest, Hydrangea 'Silver Dollar' will look beautiful as a standalone specimen shrub or combined with other Hydrangea varieties or flowering shrubs for a mixed flowering bed or border.
Paniculata varieties of Hydrangea like 'Silver Dollar' are noted as being cold-hardy and therefore suited well to the UK climate. Late spring frosts however can damage new buds so a sheltered or semi-sheltered location near a wall or protected from cold winds is best. Plant in a sunny or semi-shaded location in moist well-drained soil of any type except alkaline.
Hydrangea 'Silver Dollar' will benefit from a hard prune back in spring but preferably after the last frosts have passed. Cut back to around 3 or 4 buds above the woody base for healthy and productive growth and flowering in summer. Water regularly until established and mulch or compost applied annually around the base will help the shrub to thrive.
