Spindle Hedge Plants Description

Spindle (Euonymus europaeus) is probably most noted for its autumnal colour whereby bright pink capsules open to reveal orange fruits, and its leaves turn from deep green to a blazing red. It often retains the fruits well into winter, even after the leaves have dropped, and looks spectacular in a sunny spot (but will tolerate partial shade). For the rest of the year, Euonymus Europaeus is a twiggy upright deciduous plant, with dark green pointed leaves which does well in all normal soils and situations although it will tolerate coastal positions and slightly wet sites. Its growth rate is average at about 45cm pa.

It flowers in May/June and although the yellow-green flowers are inconspicuous, they are nectar rich so very attractive to pollinating insects, great for a bee friendly garden. See also our range of flowering hedge plants.

It's important to note that although this plant produces pretty, bright fruit, it's definitely not the edible kind as both the fruit and leaves can be harmfull if eaten, so Spindle is best simply appreciated viusally for its attractive and colourful nature. Aphids as well as pollinators can also find Spindle attractive, so it's best not to plant too near plots growing vegetables in case of aphid migration to the plant crops on which they can become an unwanted pest.

You’ll see our recommended planting densities for each size and root type listed in the product grid. We suggest that you use these as a guide, taking into consideration how long you’re willing to wait to see your finished hedge. As a rough indication bare roots can be planted at anything from 3 to 7 per metre and cell grown between 4 and 6 - the higher densities here would need to be planted in a double staggered row or zig-zag.

For more information on planting distances please see our planting density advice section.

Pruning Advice
Pruning Advice

Spindle should be pruned in late winter to early spring but take care not to trim from healthy growth as the plant may be stunted by hard pruning.

Simply remove any damaged or diseased wood and any shoots that are growing out of line with the general desired hedge shape. After pruning where necessary, it's advantageous to mulch into the surrounding soil and feed to give the plant a boost of nutrients and promote healthy growth.

Otherwise, Spindle is one of the hedge varieties that requires little by way of maintenance and can simply be left to grow naturally.
