Portuguese Laurel (Prunus lusitanica angustifolia) Hedge Plants
Portuguese Laurel has a classical quality to it, similarly to Bay Laurel, that makes it ideal for formal situations. This evergreen hedging plant has small fragrant white flowers (loved by bees and butterflies) in the summer and small red fruits (incredibly popular with birds), turning black, in Autumn. Prunus lusitanica Angustifolia is easy to grow in all soils and situations (including dry shade although it will need to be kept moist and fed until established) and is a particularly good choice for chalk soils (avoid coastal positions).
Portuguese Laurel is very hardy (even hardier than Cherry Laurel) although some wind protection is advised in areas where windburn could pose a problem. This species has a medium growth rate so it is quite easy to maintain and shape and should only need one trim per year in late Summer although if you want it to it will grow very tall.
Like other Laurel varieties (other than Bay Laurel), the leaves and berries are harmful if eaten. Portuguese Laurel is a popular variety of Laurel hedging, but we do also have the following additional varieties - Cherry Laurel, Spotted Laurel, Laurel Etna, Compact Laurel, Laurel Caucasica and Bay Laurel.

Extra Tall Root Balls - Minimum Order Quantity and Delivery
Please note that there is a minimum order requirement of 5 plants for the extra tall root balls due to the specialised delivery required. Due to their extreme size and weight, these hedging plants need to be transported via articulated lorry and require a forklift to remove from the truck and into place for planting. These products are indicated by a forklift icon on the listings.
Youll see our recommended planting densities for each size and root type listed in the product grid. We suggest that you use these as a guide, taking into consideration how long youre willing to wait to see your finished hedge. As a rough indication bare roots can be planted at anything from 3 to 7 per metre and cell grown between 4 and 6 - the higher densities here would need to be planted in a double staggered row or zig-zag.
For more information on planting distances please see our planting density advice section
