Pittosporum 'Silver Queen' Hedge Plant Description

Pittosporums are evergreen shrubs or trees with simple, leathery leaves. They have small and often fragrant 5-petalled flowers. A popular species that can be used for hedging, topiary or grown into trees for small gardens which, in the right position, can reach to 25ft or more if required. Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Silver Queen' is also known as Tawhiwhi 'Silver Queen' in its native New Zealand home and features silver-green leaves with a narrow edging of creamy white in the leaf margin. It also bears small purple flowers in spring albeit sparsely.

Pittosporum is tolerant of coastal conditions and is easy to grow in fertile, moist but well-drained, soil. This hedge plant may need protection in colder climates, especially from cold, drying winds. To achieve the best leaf effect, we recommend planting Pittosporum in full sun.

You’ll see our recommended planting densities for each size and root type listed next to the products below. We suggest that you use these as a guide, taking into consideration how long you’re willing to wait to see your finished hedge. As a rough indication bare roots can be planted at anything from 3 to 7 per metre and cell grown between 4 and 6 - the higher densities here would need to be planted in a double staggered row or zig-zag.

For more information on planting distances please see our planting density advice section. Prices shown are the price per plant unless otherwise stated.
