Pittosporum Tom Thumb Description

Tom Thumb Pittosprorum is an evergreen shrub with small, wavy, dark purple leaves and striking, dark grey or black young stems. A popular species that can be used for hedging, topiary or grown as a shrub.

Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Tom Thumb' is an unusual variety of Pittosporum; its deep purple hued leaves are offset with the contrasting new growth of light green leaves creating a visually striking and colourful appearance for which this shrub is popular. It is very dense in habit and is slow-growing so ideal for low growing hedging or a compact yet colourful shrub.

This variery of Pittosporum prefers a sheltered location and is easy to grow in fertile, moist but well-drained, soil. May need protection in colder climates especially from cold, drying winds. Plant in full sun for the best leaf effect although it will grow in a partially shaded spot.

You’ll see our recommended planting densities for each size and root type listed next to the products below. We suggest that you use these as a guide, taking into consideration how long you’re willing to wait to see your finished hedge. As a rough indication bare roots can be planted at anything from 3 to 7 per metre and cell grown between 4 and 6 - the higher densities here would need to be planted in a double staggered row or zig-zag.

For more information on planting distances please see our planting density advice section. Prices shown are the price per plant unless otherwise stated.
