Monterey cypress 'Goldcrest' Hedge Plants Description
Cupressus macrocarapa 'Goldcrest' is a very popular conifer with bright lime/yellow foliage and an upright narrow shape. In summer, its foliage is lemon scented particularly when cut or brushed. Monterey Cypress 'Goldcrest' quite vigorous, growing by 30-60cm per annum and will grow up to 5m in height but is happy to be kept lower. It is good in any free draining soil in sun or partial shade and well suited to coastal positions.
For our full range of coniferous species, including fast growing conifer hedge plants, please see the Conifer hedging section. You can also view our entire selction of Evergreen hedging for conifer alternatives.
All these plants are available all year round.
You can view Montery Cypress 'Goldcrest' (Cupressus macroparpa 'Goldcrest') within our colourful foliage section along with a number of plants which exhibit a variety of beautiful shades.
For more information on planting distances please see our
planting density advice section. As a general rule, small pots such as 2L pots can be planted anything from 2 up to about 6 per metre (if planting in a double staggered row) whereas larger pots will require a smaller number per metre due to their increased size, usually 2 - 4 per metre.
Monterey cypress Goldcrest requires little if any pruning being a member of the conifer family. However, if you wish to limit its spread or height, then trimming can be done in late spring after the last frosts.
We'd advise not to overtrim however, as this could unduly damage the plant leaving it more easily susceptible to disease, including fungal diseases such as honey fungus. This can result in unsightly brown patches affecting the lovely yellow-green foliage for which the plant is noted.
