Carpinus betulus Hedge Plants Description

A semi-evergreen species, Hornbeam hedging holds its leaves through the winter months - which turn into rich autumnal shades - and boasts lovely green catkins in late spring through to autumn, turning into fruits that are loved by wildlife. It's noted for its similarities to Beech hedging, except the leaves of the Hornbeam have serrated edges and deeper veins.

Hornbeam is highly resilient, and can tolerate poorer growing conditions such as shade, high winds and clay or wet soils. It grows around 20-40cm per year and is easily maintained at between 1-5m.

Hornbeam hedging works equally well as a single-species hedge or when combined with other native hedging. For smaller outdoor spaces or those that need extra privacy, Hornbeam hedging is also available as a space-saving instant hedging screen.

Hedges Direct has Hornbeam hedging available in all root types and can be purchased as cell-grown, pot-grown, bare-roots, root-balls or instant hedging.

You’ll see our recommended planting densities for each size and root type listed in the product grid. We suggest that you use these as a guide, taking into consideration how long you’re willing to wait to see your finished hedge. As a rough indication bare roots can be planted at anything from 3 to 7 per metre and cell grown between 4 and 6 - the higher densities here would need to be planted in a double staggered row or zig-zag.

For more information on planting distances please see our planting density advice section.

Pruning Advice

It is easy to keep Hornbeam to a neat formal shape, or it is often a component in an informal mixed native hedge because it's coppery leaves are kept on the plant and they provide some Winter wildlife cover. Clip once a year in late summer (this is important to help the plant retain its Winter colour).
