Carpinus betulus Hedge Plants Description
Hornbeam hedge plants share many similar features to Beech, however Hornbeam hedging is far more resilient and can better tolerate poorer soil conditions or exposed sites. Hornbeam, like Beech, is a UK native species and is also semi-evergreen (holding its leaves through winter, although this species tends to lose more leaves than Beech), with green catkins in late spring through to autumn, turning to fruit suitable for wildlife. Hedges Direct has a native hedging species page available, which has more information and a variety of native plants.
If you like Beech hedging, Hornbeam also shares a similar winter experience with copper-coloured leaves remaining on the branches. However the leaves are not quite as vibrant but still aesthetically pleasing. Carpinus betulus leaves consist of a brown-grey compared to the autumnal orange-brown tones of Fagus sylvatica leaves.
If you are looking for a hedge that can keep noise and wind to a minimum while protecting your home from intruders and providing privacy, a Hornbeam hedge can act as an effective screen. Aside from these qualities, Hornbeam hedging also excels in poorer conditions, so if you have planting restrictions such as shade, clay/wet soils or windy sites, then Hornbeam might be the right hedge plant for you.
Another widespread use of Hornbeam hedging is within mixed native packs, although, it also makes an excellent single species hedge and shines when combined with other shrubs. Carpinus betulus is available in all root types and can be purchased as cell-grown, pot-grown, bare-roots, root-balls or instant hedging.
Hornbeam is also available as a space-saving instant hedging screen which is ideal for smaller gardens or external areas where space, privacy and security are all a consideration. The Hornbeam screen is just one of the range of hedging screens available. Visit our Instant Hedging Screens page.

Youll see our recommended planting densities for each size and root type listed in the product grid. We suggest that you use these as a guide, taking into consideration how long youre willing to wait to see your finished hedge. As a rough indication bare roots can be planted at anything from 3 to 7 per metre and cell grown between 4 and 6 - the higher densities here would need to be planted in a double staggered row or zig-zag.
For more information on planting distances please see our planting density advice section
It is easy to keep Hornbeam to a neat formal shape, or it is often a component in an informal mixed native hedge because it's coppery leaves are kept on the plant and they provide some Winter wildlife cover. Clip once a year in late summer (this is important to help the plant retain its Winter colour).
