Crataegus monogyna Hedge Plants Description

Hawthorn is also referred to as 'May Flower' or Crataegus monogyna, and as the name suggests, this particular hedge plant species is thorny and blossoms in May. It heralds the arrival of spring, by bursting into leaf within a few days of the first buds appearing, boasting an abundant and spectacular display of stunning white scented blossom. During the autumn months, the hawthorn foliage develops into red haws, which sustain our native birds (especially starlings, thrushes, blackbirds and redwings). Crataegus monogyna supports more than 150 species of insect, rich food for birds such as wrens and blue tits. Hawthorn has dense plants covered with sharp thorns provide a safe place to roost and nest. This hedge plant is perfect for anyone looking for bird-friendly hedging.

Hawthorn leaves are 3, 5 or 7 lobed that are bright green tinged with a red. It's a fast-growing hedge (approx. 45cm p.a.), so it's important to trim this species after flowering or in the autumn. Browse Hedges Direct full range of flowering hedge plants here.

Hawthorn is suitable for all soil types and all sites other than a dense shade or very wet soils. For heavier soil types, we recommend Blackthorn as a more suitable hedging variety. Hedges Direct has a fantastic range of hedge plants that are tolerant of exposed weather conditions. According to the Woodland Trust, Hawthorn is the second most advantageous plant for wildlife, beaten only by English Oak. There are miles and miles of Hawthorn hedgerow in our countryside.

Crataegus monogyna is also one of our UK native species and is the main species in our Mixed Native Hedging selection. View our full range of Mixed Native Hedging Packs for more information.

You’ll see our recommended planting densities for each size and root type listed in the product grid. We suggest that you use these as a guide, taking into consideration how long you’re willing to wait to see your finished hedge. As a rough indication bare roots can be planted at anything from 3 to 7 per metre and cell grown between 4 and 6 - the higher densities here would need to be planted in a double staggered row or zig-zag.

For more information on planting distances please see our planting density advice section.
