Dog Rose Hedge Plants Description

A lovely and popular addition to a native mixed hedge with its burst of lightly scented pink/white open flowers carried in clusters in May/June followed by orange/red rose hips, so much sought by wildlife who eat the seeds inside the hips - see what addtional native hedge plants and hedges with berries can accompany Dog Rose in a mixed feature. It is very fast growing so we advise customers to plant smaller plants than the remainder of the hedge. Dog Rose will grow well in any well drained moist soil in sun or shade (but best in sun) and will withstand strong winds. We have a broad range of plants for exposed sites that will thrive in extreme weather conditions.

For additional hedge plants with features used for intruder-proof barriers, view our entire range of intruder proof hedging plants. We also have a delicious range of edible hedging plants for a practical garden feature.

Prices shown are the price per plant. Planting distances are very much a matter of choice - for bare roots, 3 plants per metre is adequate, 5 is good, 7 in a double staggered row will give a dense hedge quicker. Generally, smaller plants should be planted at higher density. Cell grown should be planted at 4 per metre in a single row or ideally 6 per metre in a staggered row.

Cell grown and pot grown plants are available all year round. Bare roots are only available from november to mid/late May, using cold stored plants towards the very end of the season (see our blog on cold storage).

As one of our UK native species, Dog Rose is included in our Mixed Native hedging selection. See our full range of Mixed Native Hedging Packs for more information.

You’ll see our recommended planting densities for each size and root type listed next to the products below. We suggest that you use these as a guide, taking into consideration how long you’re willing to wait to see your finished hedge. As a rough indication bare roots can be planted at anything from 3 to 7 per metre and cell grown between 4 and 6 - the higher densities here would need to be planted in a double staggered row or zig-zag.

For more information on planting distances please see our planting density advice section. Prices shown are the price per plant unless otherwise stated.
