Malus sylvestris Hedge Plants Description

Crab apples flower from March to May with stunning pink buds and white blossom flushed with a tone of pink that is sought after by bees. Malus Sylvestris can bring your garden to life, adding a summery feel to it. The fruit grown from this plant look like miniature apples with a yellow-green colour tinged with red. Unlike other apples, crab apples are very sour when eaten raw and contain high pectin content, which makes them ideal for jelly making. Crab apples can also be used to make juice when blended with less astringent apple varieties. The best time to pick crab apples is after frost. Malus Sylvestris is the third most mentioned species used for boundary hedging during the Angle Saxon times and supports 90 different species of insect and birds.

Crab apple hedges plants are native (ex-Scotland and Ireland), deciduous, resilient and works best where there's sun or in partial shade. Hedges Direct has a wide range of native hedging available that can be viewed on our website and purchased online.

The prices shown for the crab apple species are the cost per plant. Planting distances are a matter of choice. However, we recommend for bare roots, three plants per square metre are adequate, five is good, and seven in a double staggered row will provide a dense hedge quicker. As a rule of thumb, smaller plants should be planted at higher density. For cell-grown plants, it's advised to plant these shrubs at four per metre in a single row or ideally, six per metre in a staggered row.

Cell grown plants are available all year round. Bare root hedging is only available from november to late April/early May. You can view our full range of hedge plants here or contact Hedges Direct's expert team on 01257 263 873 or email us at [email protected]

You’ll see our recommended planting densities for each size and root type listed next to the products below. We suggest that you use these as a guide, taking into consideration how long you’re willing to wait to see your finished hedge. As a rough indication bare roots can be planted at anything from 3 to 7 per metre and cell grown between 4 and 6 - the higher densities here would need to be planted in a double staggered row or zig-zag.

For more information on planting distances please see our planting density advice section. Prices shown are the price per plant unless otherwise stated.

Pruning Advice
Pruning Advice

Crab Apple hedge trimming should be done twice a year, once during the cold days of early spring and again in early winter but make sure that the plant has gone dormant and frosts are not due.
