Crab Apple Hedge (Malus Sylvestris)

Online Catalogue |  Crab Apple Hedge (Malus Sylvestris)

Crab Apple (Malus Sylvestris)
Crab Apple (Malus Sylvestris)
A gorgeous addition to a native mixed hedge with its cup shaped pink flowers emerging from red buds in spring and crab apples for jelly (if the birds and squirrels leave any) after the first frost in autumn. Crab apples flower from March to May with pink buds and white blossom flushed with pink much sought after by bees. The fruit looks like miniature apples and is yellow/green tinged with red. Although very sour when raw, the crab apples have a high pectin content which makes them ideal for jelly making - or apple juice when blended with less astringent apple varieties. Pick after frost. Crab apple is the 3rd most mentioned species used for boundary hedging in Angle Saxon times and it supports 90 different species of insect and birds.

It is native (ex Scotland and Ireland), deciduous, hardy and does best in sun or partial shade. It will tolerate dry and exposed sites. Crab Apple can be "hedged" or allowed to grow as a tree.

Prices shown are the price per plant. Planting distances are very much a matter of choice - for bare roots, 3 plants per metre is adequate, 5 is good, 7 in a double staggered row will give a dense hedge quicker. Generally, smaller plants should be planted at higher density. Cell grown should be planted at 4 per metre in a single row or ideally 6 per metre in a staggered row.

Bare roots are only available November to March but you can pre-order bare root plants during summer/autumn 2010 for delivery in November 2010 - and get the benefit of last year's prices. Cell grown plants are available all year round.

Don't forget to order RootGrow or Bonemeal (see the section at the bottom of the left hand menu).

Please see our new list of superb quality Specimen Shrubs (bottom of the menu on the left hand side of the website) - free delivery when ordered with your hedging plants.

Bare roots are only available November to March.
