 | Bamboo (Phyllostachys) We sell a number of varieties of Bamboo which are an excellent choice for a low maintenance, tall hedge. What they all have in common is that they are evergreen, grow very tall very quickly, and have beautiful strong canes (in different colours). Bamboo can have a tendancy to be invasive so they are best in areas where there is room to spread, or kept planted in a pot twice the size of the root (even underground) or grown in slightly dry soil which is not their preference. In good conditions they will grow up to 6m tall. To achieve their full height, they like a moist soil so we recommend planting them slightly below ground level (just an inch or two) so that there's a dish around the canes to hold some rainwater. Bamboo can take a year or two to fully settle and they need to be watered well until they are established and fed alternate years in late spring after the first shoots have reached full height. They prefer sun or semi shade and will grow by 60/90cm pa. The only trimming they need is the removal of weak canes every 2 or 3 years.
Black Bamboo has intensely black canes (creamy green in the first year), is clump forming and has an arching habit. Golden Bamboo has lemony yellow canes with green stripes and in good sunlight the canes will turn orange/pink. This variety is not as vigorous as the Black and Green Bamboo and will achieve the same height with very little/no invasion.
Green Bamboo has green canes and looks very fresh all year round.
Prices shown are the price per plant. Plant smaller plants at 1 or 2 per metre and larger plants at 1 per metre or 1 per metre.
